The vines can be grown on trellises, fences and pergolas, around patios and decks, under trees, and directly on walls. These vines grow well with average soil moisture and partial shade, though some can take full shade or full sun giving the home gardener more options for use in the landscape.

Some of the blue flowering vines are native plants which frequently helps the plants be more insect resistant and salt tolerant and have natural disease resistance. Many of these vines are successfully used in stressful urban settings.  The American Wisteria, Wisteria frutescens is great for extending color in the garden since it flowers much later than either Chinese Wisteria, Wisteria sinensis or Japanese Wisteria, Wisteria floribunda.  While occuring naturally from Virginia and the Carolinas south to Florida and west to Texas, American Wisteria can be planted in many more areas but appreciates having an average to moist location to thrive in.  Blooming later depends on where you live, but you can expect the American Wisteria to bloom for several months summer thru Fall.  Several lovely Cultivars have been introduced adding increased fragrance in 'Amethyst Falls', white flowers in 'Nivea' and 'Magnifica' has a contrasting large yellow blotch on lilac colored blooms.

Vines that flower blue add serenity to a garden and can even make a hot garden feel a bit cooler with their cool colors.  Blue flowering plants are not as common as many other colors, so the key to enjoying the color is planting a variety so the ones that bloom in early spring are then replaced by late spring blooming varieties; flowing into the summer blooming Clematis; through to the fall blooming American Wisteria.  The relaxing blue can be enjoyed throughout the season.

You may also be surprised at the diversity in the list of these vines since some can also be used as groundcovers and shrubs.  In particular are the Periwinkles or Vincas, though not the annual Vinca (Catharanthus roseum) that is used as a bedding plant or in hanging baskets.  These groundcover Periwinkles are solid performers that work well underplanted with spring and autumn-flowering bulbs. Daffodils (Narcissus) for spring and Autumn-Flowering Crocus (Colchicum).  The robust growing Periwinkle foliage covers over the yellowing foliage of the bulbs as they go into natural dormancy following the bloom cycle.
