Vines That Can Grow in Dry Conditions Below you will find a list of Vines from our plant database that can grow in dry climates. If you click on any of the photos, you will see a Virtual Plant Tag that may contain photos, plant descriptions, usage suggestions and a link to where you can buy that plant. Certain varieties of drought tolerant vines can handle lower soil moisture levels for months on end and can flourish in areas where there is little or no precipitation for much of the year. For example, Campsis Radicans, more commonly known as Common Trumpetcreeper, Hummingbird Vine or Trumpet Vine is native to United States, naturally occurring as far west as Texas. Since it is tolerant of hotter and drier climates, it also does well in Arizona, New Mexico and California. Uses for these vines vary by variety, but in particular, areas that receive a lot of sun and very little moisture, or only receive rain periodically. The vines can be grown on trellises and pergolas, around patios and decks, under trees, and directly on walls. While these vines have drought tolerance and can grow for long periods in dry conditions, many also grow equally well in moderate and even moist conditions too. Some of the vines for dry conditions are native plants which frequently helps the plants be more insect resistant, disease resistant and salt tolerant. Many of these vines are successfully used in stressful urban settings. As you look at the thumbnail images of the vines in this list, you will see that many also flower, have lovely fall or Autumn foliage colors, or beautiful fruits also. In addition, many of these vines attract birds and butterflies, particularly hummingbirds, to your home garden. You may also be surprised at the diversity in the list of these vines since some can also be used as groundcovers and shrubs. |
