Growing White Flowering Trees

Below you will find a list of Trees from our plant database that are white flowering. If you click any of the photos, you will see a Virtual Plant Tag that may contain plant descriptions, usage suggestions and a link to where you can buy that plant for your landscaping. The concept of a tree can be difficult to define since different people might consider the same plant a broadleaf evergreen, needled evergreen, conifer, bush or shrub.

Uses for these trees vary by variety, and may also thrive in partial shade, partial sun, full shade or full sun. These trees may do equally well in wet soil, average moisture or dry conditions.

Our focused search engine that sorts the data includes anything relevant.  This can be confusing on pages like these because plants with flowers with white centers, flowers that start pink but fade to white, species that have flowers in a variety of colors and similar situations are included.

This list of recommendations for native trees with white flowers is exciting because it is filled with vigorous growing native plants and includes: Allegheny Serviceberry or Amelanchier laevis, American Elder or Sambucus canadensis, American Plum or Prunus americana, American Snowberry or Styrax americanus, American Yellowwood, Virgilia or Cladrastis kentuckea which is one of the best native trees grown, Bull Bay, Evergreen or Southern Magnolia (M. grandiflora) and interesting cultivars, Carolina Silverbell or Halesia tetraptera one of the best native trees for shady areas, Downy Serviceberry or Shadbush (A. arborea), white form of the Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis 'Alba'), Flowering Dogwood or Cornus florida and selections, Sourwood or Sorrel Tree (Oxydendron arboreum) a good multi-season ornamental, Sweetbay, Laurel or Swamp Magnolia (M. virginiana).

Introduced or non-native plants that are garden classics of white-flowering trees are: Crapemyrtle or Lagerstroemia, Flowering Cherries (Prunus) and Flowering Crabapples (Malus) of several species and wonderful hybrid cultivars, Flowering Pears (Pyrus calleryana or P. fauriei) but only consider the greatly improved cultivars since 'Bradford', Japanese Snowbell or Styrax japonicus, Japanese Tree Lilac or Syringa reticulata, Kousa or Chinese Dogwood (C.kousa), a variety of Magnolias and hybrids, Yoshino Cherry (Prunus x yedoensis).

Trees with white flowers add a brightness and softness to the landscape and work with cool colors of purple, blue and pink but also with warm colors of red, magenta, fuchsia and yellow. Trees with white blooms look great with green and white leaves of variegated plants.
