Certain varieties of water loving vines can handle high soil moisture levels for months on end and can flourish in areas where there is above average precipitation for much of the year.

For example, Pieris phillyreifolia also known as Vine-wicky, is native to United States, naturally occurring throughout much of South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Alabama. This flowering vines is attractive climbing Pond Cypress, Bald Cypress, Atlantic Whitecedar and Sabal Palmetto. Since it is tolerant of hotter and wetter climates, it also does well throughout much of the Southeast portion of the United States.  Planting natives in areas farther than their natural distribution can be done nicely if the home gardener can match the natural conditions the plant evolved to.  In this case, providing additional water would allow this flowering vine to flourish.

Uses for these vines vary by variety, but in particular, areas that receive a mix of shade or sun and abundant moisture are best. The vines can be grown on trellises and pergolas, around patios and decks, under trees, and directly on walls and even on other plants nearby. While these vines have a preference or tolerance for high moisture soils and can grow for periods in standing water, many also grow equally well in moderate, average and even dry conditions too.

Some of the vines for wet conditions are native plants which frequently helps the plants have more disease resistance, be more insect resistant and salt tolerant.

As you look at the thumbnail images of the vines in this list, you will see that many also flower, have lovely fall or Autumn foliage colors, or beautiful fruits also. You may also be surprised at the diversity in the list of these vines since some can also be used as groundcovers and broadleaf evergreen shrubs.
