With full sun and variety of moisture tolerances, the vines shown can be strong enough to be fairly self supporting like the Lady Banks Rose, Rosa bankiae; Cascading along a fence like the Trumpet Vine, Campsis Radicans or need full support like Japanese Wisteria, Wisteria floribunda. The vines can also be grown on trellises and pergolas, around patios and decks, under trees, and directly on walls.

Some of the vines for sunny climates are native plants which frequently helps the plants be more insect resistant, have more natural disease resistance and salt tolerance. Many of these vines are successfully used in stressful urban settings.  Several wonderful native vines that do really well in full sun are Scarlet Clematis, Clematis texensis and Crossvine or Quartervine, Bignonia capreolata.  The Scarlet Clematis blooms a long time during the summer, from June or July until Frost.  Specific Cultivars have been chosen widening the color choices for this durable, dependable flowering plant.  The Crossvine species is unusual in its color and bloom time.  Typically ranging from brown to red to orange, the burst of color from the blossoms in April is welcome relief to migrating Hummingbirds.  The more well-known introduced Cultivars of 'Atrosanguinea', 'Jekyll', 'Shalimar Red' and 'Tangerine Beauty' add red-purple, a rich orange, deep red and fresh Tangerine hues and extended bloom time.

As you look at the thumbnail images of the vines in this list, you will see that many flower, have lovely fall or Autumn foliage colors, or beautiful fruits or berries. In addition, many of these vines attract birds and butterflies, particularly hummingbirds, to your home garden. You may also be surprised at the diversity in the list of these vines since some can also be used as groundcovers and broadleaf evergreen shrubs.
