Dirr says: "The species and variety regelianum are my favorite privets for northern climates. They rarely appear in southern gardens."

Growth:

  Range: Grows from 10' to 20'.
Dirr says: "Grows 10 to 12' tall with a spread of 12 to 15'. Usually a multi-stemmed shrub or broad horizontal outline, broadest at the top, much branched and twiggy with wide-spreading branches."

Dirr says: "unpleasantly fragrant, early to mid-June and later, borne in 3/4 to 1 1/2" long nodding panicles. usually numerous on short axillary branches."

Dirr says: "Sometimes turning russet to purplish in fall."

Dirr says: "Fruit is black to blue-black (dark gray), slightly bloomy (waxy), 1/4" long, berry-like drupe that ripens in September and persists."
