| Osmanthus heterophyllus (ilicifolius) |
| |
Can tolerate both shady and sunny conditions.
Moderate to dry conditions.
Dirr says: "more shade tolerant than given credit for. Full sun (May discolor slightly) to medium shade."
Climate / Hardiness Zones:
| |
Zone 6 to Zone 9
Dirr says: "Hardiest of the Asiatic Osmanthus and the best for the upper South and northern areas along the coast. More cold hardy than I or the literature gave credit, probably a respectable Zone 6; have observed excellent plants on University of Delaware's campus at Newark; also a plant growing at F. W. Schumacher, Sandwich, MA."
Growth:
| |
Range: Grows from 10' to 30'.
Dirr says: "8 to 10' (up to 20') in height, spread slightly less; old plants on the Georgia campus are 12 to 15' high and slightly wider; in youth the habit is distinctly upright; easily maintained at specific heights by proper pruning. Dense, upright-oval to rounded evergreen shrub of impenetrable constitution. Will withstand heavy pruning."
Flowers:
| |
Color(s): White
Season(s):
Late Fall
Dirr says: "exceedingly fragrant. The flowers are largely hidden by the foliage but the fragrance is overpowering, borne 4 to 5 together in cymes during late September - October into early November. Flowers after O. x fortunei."
Foliage:
| |
Broadleaf Evergreen
Color:
Leaves are dark green in the summer.
Fruit:
| |
Color:
Black
Season(s):
Late Fall
Dirr says: "Seldom seen in cultivation; fruit is a slender 3/8 to 1/2" long, bluish purple-black to black drupe; not showy; ripen in fall of the year following flowering."
Landscape Value:
| |
Can be used as a container plant. Can be used as a foundation plant. Can be used as a hedge plant. Can be used as a grouping plant.
Dirr says: "Borders, screens, hedge, formal specimen, by walks and entrances. Is extremely spiny and not as handsome as O. x fortunei; makes an excellent screen or barrier planting."
