Armitage says: "The flower head is oblong like a pineapple and one of the bluest of the sea hollies.Twelve to 18 finely divided, rather soft involucre bracts prominently extend from the flower head and give this species its marvelous ornamental value.The flower and associated involucre look like exploding fireworks.The involucre of immature flowers are almost white, then become bluer with age.For flower power, this is the best species.It is a popular cut flower and lasts for at least 2 weeks in water."
