Origin:

  species from China, Japan

Sun/Water Requirements:

  Partial/Full sun.
Moderate climate.
Dirr says: "This species displays excellent heat tolerance and its only requirements are full sun and well-drained soil, although plants in half-shade are presentable."

Climate / Hardiness Zones:

  Zone 4 to Zone 9

Dirr says: "Double Reeves Spirea is more prominent in the South than the species. 'Lanceata' has been growing in the Dirr garden for 19 years and has required no maintenance. Cappiello reported regular stem damage (dieback) in Orono, ME."

Growth:

  Range: Grows to 5'.
Dirr says: "Habit is mounded - rounded with graceful, wispy, arching branches. Height ranges from 4 to 6' and the spread is similar. Grows extremely fast and would be a good filler in a shrub border. "

Flowers:

  Color(s): White
Season(s): Early Spring

Dirr says: "The showy white, 1/2" diameter, many-petaled flowers appear in abundance during early April (Athens, GA), in upright terminal corymbs. The flowers open before those of S. x vanhouttei and often overlap those of Vanhoutte. Pruning should be accomplished after flowering. Often leaves and flowers emerge so early (March) that the tender flower buds are killed by a hard freeze. The single-flowered form (straight species) is also attractive but the flowers do not last as long as the doubles."

Foliage:

  Deciduous
Semi-Evergreen
Color: Leaves are bluish-green in the summer.
Dirr says: "The leaves are bluish green and hold late in the fall without coloring. May be almost evergreen in deep South and part of California. Have observed bud swell and leaf emergence as early as February 15."

Landscape Value:

Can be used as a hedge plant.
Can be used as a grouping plant.

Dirr says: "Should not be used for hedges. The species is one of the parents of the ubiquitous S. x vanhouttei and is seldom cultivated."
