Origin:

  Japan, Southern China  

Sun/Water Requirements:

  Can tolerate both shady and sunny conditions.
Moderate climate.
Dirr says: "Full sun to moderate shade. root rot in wet situation; like Taxus does not tolerate wet feet."

Climate / Hardiness Zones:

  Zone 8 to Zone 10

Dirr says: "Severly injured at -3°F on Georgia campus, many plants burned at 11°F at Sea Island, GA, most probably because of the cambial damage (bark split) during the 1983-84 freeze."

Growth:

  Range: Grows from 15' to 30'.
Dirr says: "quite stiff and rigid, 20 to 35' high, one-half this in spread; smaller in Piedmont. Upright oval to columnar evergreen shrub or tree."

Flowers:

  Color(s): Brown

Dirr says: "male catkin-like, cylindrical, yellow brown, 1 to 1 1/2" long in clusters; female consists of a short stalk bearing few scales of which only upper one or two are fertile; April - early May."

  Broadleaf Evergreen
Color: Leaves are dark green in the summer.
Dirr says: "lustrous dark green throughout the seasons. Leaves from 3 to 4" long, 2/5" wide on mature trees, often longer to 7" on young trees."  

Fruit:

  Color: Red, Blue, Purple
Season(s): Fall
Dirr says: "red to red-purple, 1/2" long, have seen fruits with a pronounced bloom (wax) that gave them a bluish color. Fruits are not poisonous and can be used to make preserves."

  Can be used as a container plant.

Dirr says: "Makes a good hedge, screen or small specimen tree where adapted, Zone 8b and south. In northern areas are utilized as house and conservatory plants. Used in quantity along the Georgia coast, throughout Florida, Gulf Coast and California."
