Origin:

  Eastern North America

Climate / Hardiness Zones:

  Zone 4 to Zone 9

Growth:

Range: Grows from 18" to 36".

Flowers:

  Color(s): Green, White
Season(s): Summer

Armitage says: "This often overlooked species has always been a tough, reliable performer grown for the handsome evergreen foliage rather than the flowers. The small, 1/8" wide flowers are borne in 15-20" long airy, unbranched panicles."

Foliage:

Color: Leaves are green and purple.
Armitage says: "This often overlooked species has always been a tough, reliable performer grown for the handsome evergreen foliage rather than the flowers. The 4-6" long leaves are rounded to heart shaped with 5-7 lobes. Its charm comes from the mottled purple color of the young foliage, which later subsides as the leaves mature. If proper cultural conditions are provided, new leaves are produced all season. It is important that the soil remain consistently moist if foliage is to be produced throughout the season."

Landscape Value:

Can be used as an ornamental plant.

Armitage says: "Although not particularly ornamental, I enjoy them poking through the foliage and swaying in the afternoon breeze."
