Origin:

Maine to Florida, west to eastern North Dakota, south to Oklahoma and Louisiana

Sun/Water Requirements:

  Partial/Full sun.
Moderate to dry conditions.

Climate / Hardiness Zones:

  Zone 3 to Zone 9

Growth:

Range: Grows from 50' to 100'.
Dirr says: "60 to 80' in height with a spread 1/2 to 2/3's the height, but can grow to 100' or more. Tall, stately tree with numerous slender, low hung, spreading branches; pyramidal in youth; at maturity the lower drooping down then up, forming a deep, ovate, oblong or somewhat rounded crown."

Flowers:

  Season(s): Early Summer

Dirr says: "fragrant, borne in 5 to 10 (15) flowered, 2 to 3" wide, pendulous cymes in mid to late June. Bees supposedly make the best honey from these flowers."

  Deciduous
Color: Leaves are dark green in the summer and yellow and green in the fall.

Fruit:

  Color: Black
Season(s): Summer, Fall

Landscape Value:

Can be used as a shade tree.

Dirr says: "Landscape value limited because of size; too many superior European species which are more tolerant and ornamental; a handsome native tree that should be left in the woods; definitely not for the small property; perhaps parks, golf courses and other large areas."

Other:

  Is Resistant to Drought
