  central China

Dirr says: "Hardy to Boston and should be pursued by discriminating gardeners."

Growth:

  Range: Grows from 15' to 30'.
Dirr says: "a small (15 to 25') tree or large shrub with a rich, smooth, light tan-white bark. On young plants, the bark exfoliates in relatively long, shiny cinnamon brown sheets, not unlike Acer griseum."

  Color(s): White
Season(s): Summer

Dirr says: "Fragrant, cup-shaped. 1 1/2 to 2" diameter flowers are smaller than those of the other species treated here, with the exception of S. monadelpha (Tall Stewartia)."

Dirr says: "Leaves may turn reddish in fall but the few trees I have observed were a subdued reddish and certainly not the rich crimson as described in some references."

Dirr says: "the 5-angled and 5-beaked, 3/4" wide capsule is about the largest of the genus."
