Origin:

  Delaware to Florida, west to southern Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas  

Sun/Water Requirements:

  Requires full sun.
Dry to wet conditions.
Dirr says: "very adaptable tree to wet, dry and well-drained soil conditions."

Climate / Hardiness Zones:

  Zone 4 to Zone 12

Dirr says: "has been planted far north of its natural range; there are specimens in Minnesota, southern Canada and a few 75-year-old trees in Syracuse, NY. Reported outright kill in Orono, ME. Should be acid soils for chlorosis will occur on high pH soils. Exceptionally wind firm and even winds of hurricane force rarely overturn them."

Growth:

  Range: Grows from 50' to 100'.
Dirr says: "typically 50 to 70' high by 20 to 30' wide, can grow to 100' or more. A lofty, deciduous conifer of slender, pyramidal habit, almost columnar in youth, with a stout, straight trunk buttressed at the base. Picturesque with old age."

Color: Leaves are green and bluish-green in the summer and orange and brown in the fall.
Dirr says: "bright yellow-green in spring; soft sage green in summer; in autumn in becomes a russet, soft brown to a mellow orangish-brown."

  Can be used as a specimen plant.
Can be used as a grouping plant.

Dirr says: "There is something hauntingly beautiful about a 'grove' of Baldcypress. A stately tree, a decided accent of texture and form; in parks or large estates it makes a distinctive specimen; have seen it used in groupings and groves around lakes and the effect is spectacular. It should be mentioned that the 'cypress knees' occur only near water or in exceedingly moist soils"
