Origin:

  Southern Asia, Mediterranean region.

Sun/Water Requirements:

  Partial/Full sun.

Dirr says: "Prefers well drained soil, withstands dry conditions. Used in Florida in sandy highway medium plantings which is an indication of its adapability."

Climate / Hardiness Zones:

  Zone 8 to Zone 11

Dirr says: "Actually best in lower portion of Zone 8, below 15°F some foliar or stem damage is virtually guaranteed. Needs protection in upper parts of Zone 8. Tolerates polluted conditions."

Growth:

Range: Grows from 6' to 20'.
Dirr says: "6 to 12' high, often smaller in mid-South because of occasional freeze injury; to 20' high in deep south; have seen 20' specimens in Florida and along coast of Georgia. Usually rounded bushy evergreen shrub."

Flowers:

Color(s): Lavender, Magenta, Orange, Peach, Pink, Purple, Red, Violet, White, Yellow
Season(s): Late Spring, Summer

Dirr says: "each flower is 1 to 1 1/2" across on new growth from June - August and into mid-fall, fragrant or non-fragrant. Quite handsome in flower. Have seen the plant in flower literally year-round, although summer is peak time. Flowers on new growth of the season and after the 1983-84 winter numerous plants were killed to the ground along the Georgia coast yet came back and flowered in the same year. Colors also include peach, flesh, copper, cream, lilac, carmine, salmon, apricot."

Foliage:

  Broadleaf Evergreen
Color: Leaves are dark green in the summer.

Landscape Value:

Can be used as a container plant.
Can be used as an ornamental plant.
Can be used as a foundation plant.
Can be used as a hedge plant.
Can be used as a grouping plant.

Dirr says: "Can be fashioned as a small tree in lower South; widely utilized in California, Arizona and New Mexico and coastal areas from South Carolina to Florida and Texas as massing plant, large shrub or small tree. Excellent container or tub plant, foundations, borders, screens, groupings in coastal areas where wind and salt are problematic. Caution: all parts of the plant are poisonous. Can be used where there is a significant amount of reflected light. Makes a great visual barrier."

Other:

  Is Resistant to Drought
Is Heat Tolerant
Is Salt Tolerant
Dirr says: "Wind Tolerant, supposedly withstands marshy soils. Responds to fertility. Good heat tolerance and could be used where there is a significant amount of reflected light."
