Michael Dirr
| Vitex negundo |
Origin:
| |
Madagascar, Philippines, eastern and southeastern Asia
| |
Requires full sun.
Moderate climate.
Dirr says: "well-drained soils definitely aids in reducing winter injury; if pruning is necessary, cut the plants to within 6 to 12" of the ground in spring or back to live wood on old plants."
Climate / Hardiness Zones:
| |
Zone 5 to Zone 8
Dirr says: "Zone 6, often listed as 5 but shakily so, does well in southern states into Zone 8. Prefers hot weather"
Growth:
| |
Range: Grows from 15' to 30'.
Dirr says: "size difficult to predict in the North since plants are often frozen to the ground; the height in one growing season might be 3 to 5' but if no damage is done, over the years the plant may grow 10 to 15'; plants at the J.C. Raulston Arboretum, Raleigh, NC were over 20' high. Not a bad looking plant in leaf; develops a loosely branched, airy, open outline, vase-shaped habit with cloud-like airy foliage canopy, can become ratty with time, requires pruning."
Flowers:
| |
Color(s): Blue, Purple
Season(s):
Late Summer
Dirr says: "Small, blue-purple, lilac or lavender, in loose clusters forming slender spikes collected into 5 to 8" panicles; effective in July - August (early to mid June in Athens, GA); flowers on new growth of the season. Nice late season flower effect. Will flower recurrently during late summer as long as new growth develops. Not a bad idea to remove spent flowers since this may result in a late season flush of growth."
Foliage:
| |
Deciduous
Color:
Leaves are green and gray in the summer and green and brown in the fall.
Dirr says: "Interesting foliage texture. Nothing to speak of in the way of fall color. Leafs out late."
Fruit:
| |
Color:
Black
Season(s):
Late Summer
Dirr says: "small drupe of no consequence, persists, if removed new growth often ensues and additional flowers are produced."
Landscape Value:
| |
Can be used as an ornamental plant. Can be used as a grouping plant.
Dirr says: "Possibly a plant for the shrub border; should almost be treated as an herbaceous perennial in the North; large shrub or small tree in South and West."
