Origin:

  Texas and Mexico

Climate / Hardiness Zones:

  Zone 8

Dirr says: "Prefers low humidity environments and perfectly drained, acid or higher pH soil. Avoid excessive fertility and root zone moisture. Like other Southwest native plants, the humidity and high night temperatures of the eastern seaboard and southeastern states often prove lethal. No doubt, the various taxa are better suited to the southwestern United States."

Growth:

Range: Grows from 5' to 8'.
Spread: 4' to 6'
Dirr says: "Has become popular in recent years and is moving ino southeastern markets. I have seen plants performing quite well; others dying. The species is typically a compact shrub probably 5 to 8' high and 4 to 6' wide but most of the new introductions will probably not grow as large. Amenable to pruning."

Flowers:

  Color(s): Purple
Season(s): Summer

Dirr says: "1" wide rose-purple, bell-shaped flowers appear in summer."

Foliage:

  Broadleaf Evergreen
Color: Leaves are gray in the summer.
Dirr says: "The evergreen, silvery pubescent on both surfaces, 1/2 to 1" long leaves provide a handsome contrast to dark green shrubs. "

Landscape Value:

Can be used as a container plant.
Can be used as a foundation plant.
Can be used as a grouping plant.

Dirr says: "Use is shrub border or possibly filler in herbaceous perennial borders."

Other:

  Is Salt Tolerant
