Armitage says: "Plant in full sun, containers work well to keep height under control."

Growth:

  Range: Grows from 3' to 4'.
Armitage says: "In their native habitat, plants are small trees, growing up to 20' tall, but otherwise are shrubby in habit, producing woody stems and 4-sided branches as they mature.Plant in full sun, containers work well to keep height under control.Pinch in early summer as soon as vigorous growth occurs."

Flowers:

  Color(s): Purple, Red
Season(s): Summer

Armitage says: "It was like an oven in San Antonio, but the sidewalk and surrounding building was even hotter, yet the abundant scarlet blossoms were flowering their heads off and the plants were actually enjoying themselves.They had obviously been flowering for a long time because the containers were full and black to purple berries were numerous.The plant really comes into its own with the tubular scarlet flowers begin to appear in terminal flat topped 3-5" wide inflorescences (cymes)."  

Foliage:

  Armitage says: "The pointed leaves are about 4-6" long and 2-3" wide and are handsome due in part to the pinkish veins and red petioles."  

Landscape Value:

  Can be used as a container plant.

Other:

  Armitage says: "I first saw Hamelia on a visit in October to San Antonio, TX.where they had been planted in containers on a sidewalk near the entrance of the building."
