Origin:

  California

Sun/Water Requirements:

  Partial/Full sun.
Moderate to wet conditions.
Armitage says: "Place in full sun to partial shade in open soils, but moisture must also be provided. Plants need excellent drainage, often growing best in rock gardens, or between rocks in a patio or walkway."

Growth:

Range: Grows from 6" to 9".

Flowers:

  Color(s): Blue
Season(s): Spring

Armitage says: "It is a true annual, flowering first year from seed. Flowers are a beautiful gentian blue, measuring about an 1" across, with five purple stamens and white anthers. The anthers make the flowers appear to be spotted white. Cool temperatures, especially cool nights are needed to keep plants flowering (actually to keep them alive) in eastern gardens."

Foliage:

Armitage says: "Plants generally have reddish stems, bearing oval, pointed, toothed leaves, some say also have a pleasant fragrance when crushed."

Other:

Armitage says: "One of the most beautiful blues found in garden plants, this southern California native inspires all who see it, but also frustrates almost as many others."
