  Maine, Ontario, Michigan to Florida and Texas  

Sun/Water Requirements:

  Partial/Full sun.
Moderate to wet conditions.
Dirr says: "Responds well to water and fertilizer."

Climate / Hardiness Zones:

  Zone 4 to Zone 9

Dirr says: "not for heavily polluted areas. Does not tolerate high pH soils. Sheltered locations from wind preferred."

Growth:

  Range: Grows from 30' to 50'.
Dirr says: "pyramidal when young with densely set branches, some of which are pendulous; in old age the numerous spreading and often horizontal branches form an irregularly rounded or flat-topped crown.; there is great variation in mature habit; the young trees take on the appearance of Q. palustris (Pin Oak)"

Color: Leaves are dark green in the summer and yellow, orange, red and purple in the fall.
Dirr says: "outstanding summer and fall foliage and habit, lovely in a naturalized area: certainly one of the best and most consistent native trees for fall color. In all situations, the glory of its fall coloration always stands out above its other features."

Dirr says: "excellent specimen tree, acceptable street tree in residential areas. Lovely in a naturalized area. One of our most beautiful native trees."

  Dirr says: "I have a great love for N. sylvatica and do not adhere to the difficult transplanting philosophy. If container-grown and moved in small sizes it will reestablish quite well."
