Origin:

Formosa, south China, Ryukyu Islands of Japan

Sun/Water Requirements:

  Requires full sun.
Moderate climate.

Climate / Hardiness Zones:

  Zone 7 to Zone 9

Dirr says: "Observations indicated that late spring freezes were more damaging than typical Zone 7b winter low temperatures. For best performance, Zone 8 to 9 is recommended."

Growth:

Range: Grows from 15' to 30'.
Dirr says: "small, graceful tree."

Flowers:

  Color(s): Red
Season(s): Early Spring, Late Winter

Dirr says: "deep rose, 3/4" diameter flowers, 2 to 6 together on pedicel. In my mind, the flowers may be the most handsome of all the ornamental cherries. I have seen flowers as early as late January in Athens, GA, but they usually open in February. Because of the early flowering date, buds and/or flowers may be injured if they are too far open."

Foliage:

  Deciduous
Color: Leaves are dark green in the summer and red in the fall.

Fruit:

  Color: Red
Season(s): Early Spring, Late Winter

Landscape Value:

Can be used as an ornamental plant.

Dirr says: "Has flowered in early February along with Hamamelis mollis (Chinese Witchhazel). This is a most effective combination, the bright yellow of the witchhazel and the rose-carmine of the cherry."

Other:

  Is Heat Tolerant
