  mountains and hills from Pennsylvania to Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee

  Partial/Full shade.
Moderate climate.
Dirr says: "Prefers partial shade."

Dirr says: "Cappiello, University of Maine, Orono, reported outright kill of the species but no damage to 'Margothy Creek'. Another ericaceous plant which requires cultural manipulation if success is to be had; requires an acid, loose, well-drained soil supplied with organic matter."

Growth:

  Range: Grows to 5'.
Dirr says: "6 to 18" high, spreading indefinitely; dwarf evergreen shrub spreading by underground rootstocks and forming a solid mat or dense, broad mound."

Dirr says: "self-sterile but cross-fertile, 1/4" long, urn-shaped, May through early June; borne in short few-flowered racemes near the end of the shoot."

Dirr says: "glossy, although when grown in full sun often has reddish cast on dark green foliage; becoming deep bronze to reddish purple in winter."

Dirr says: "A very lovely, intriguing evergreen ground cover well-suited to areas underneath pine trees and rhododendrons where the soil is acid and well-drained. A rare American plant, lost to American gardens for a time, but was reintroduced through the efforts of the Arnold Arboretum, Boston, MA. It has been theorized that one particular stand (colony) in central Pennsylvania covering an area of 300 acreas and a mile long originated from one plant and is over 12,000-years-old; true?"
