  Eastern China

Growth:

  Range: Grows from 15' to 30'.
Dirr says: "is known by this author from the specimen that grows along the Chinese Walk at the Arnold Arboretum. A large, upright shrub to 15' (40' in the wild) with gray-brown ridged-and-furrowed bark similar to S. ovata (Mountain Stewartia). To my knowledge, not well-known in botanic gardens or commerce. The overall appearance and flower are more like American species but more easily cultured than them."

Dirr says: "The emerging flower buds are surrounded by large, reddish tinged bracts. Flowers average 2 to 2 1/2" diameter, flowering May 30, 1991 at the Arnold Arboretum (Boston). It is the first species to open."
