Origin:

  Virginia to Florida, west to Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana  

Sun/Water Requirements:

  Partial/Full sun.
Moderate climate.
Dirr says: "It is found in the wild, natively in lowlands bordering streams. In the wild it can look rather forlorn, but when freed from competition it makes a fine garden shrub."

Climate / Hardiness Zones:

  Zone 5 to Zone 9

Dirr says: "some dieback may occur in severe winters."

Growth:

  Range: Grows from 5' to 10'.
Dirr says: "small, slender-stemmed, rather wispy 6 to 8 or 10' high rounded shrub."

Flowers:

  Color(s): White
Season(s): Late Spring, Early Summer

Dirr says: "the beautiful, bell-shaped flowers with high reflexed lobes hang from the leaf axils in May or June. Flowered late April - early May in Athens, GA; May 30, 1991 in full flower at the Arnold Arboretum (Boston). Each 5-petaled flower is 1/2 to 3/4" long, 3/4 to 1 1/4" wide, produced 1 to 4 at the ends of short branches on 1/4 to 1/2" long pedicels (stalks). The petals are quite narrow, usually about 1/4" wide."

Color: Leaves are green in the summer and yellow in the fall.
Dirr says: "leaves do no develop any significant fall color."  

Fruit:

  Color: Brown
Season(s): Late Summer, Early Fall
Dirr says: "the 1/3" long gray drupe develops in August - September."  

Landscape Value:

  Can be used as a grouping plant.

Dirr says: "I consider this a beautiful shrub and if given a cool, moist, acid root run will reward the gardener many-fold."
