Origin:

  Northwestern China

Sun/Water Requirements:

  Requires full sun.
Moderate climate.
Dirr says: "In our heavy, wet Georgia soils it has not persisted. In fact, several replantings have died while B. davidii in the same location prospers."

Climate / Hardiness Zones:

  Zone 5 to Zone 7

Dirr says: "This is the hardiest of the butterfly bushes and the first to flower."

Growth:

Range: Grows from 15' to 30'.
Dirr says: "large shrub or small tree that grows 10 to 20' in height. The habit is lax and long pendulous shoots flay their supple arms in the slightest breeze. Has been likened to a gracious small-leaved weeping willow when not in flower and a sheer waterfall of soft purple when it is."

Flowers:

  Color(s): Purple
Season(s): Summer

Dirr says: "appear in dense clusters in June from the axils of the previous season's wood. The flowers are fragrant but not to the degree of many B. davidii cultivars. Remember, this species flowers on last year's wood so prune after flowering."

Foliage:

  Deciduous
Color: Leaves are dark green, bluish-green and gray in the summer.

Fruit:

  Color: Black
Season(s): Fall

Landscape Value:

Can be used as a grouping plant.

Dirr says: "Great for foliage color and texture in a border."
