  North Carolina to Kentucky and Tennessee; scattered in Indiana, Illinois, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma

Dirr says: "generally occurs in rich well-drained limestone soils in river valleys, slopes and ridges along streams"

Dirr says: "fragrant, borne in 8 to 14" panicles in May to early June (late April to early May in Athens, GA); tends to produce the greatest abundance of flowers in alternate years or every third year; flowers when 12 to 18' tall; in full flower the tree appears to be dripping with white rain."
