Michael Dirr
| Pyracantha koidzumii |
| |
Requires full sun.
Moderate to dry conditions.
Dirr says: "Excellent choice for hot, dry areas; plants on the Georgia campus have survived numerous droughts during the 1980's and fruited heavily."
Climate / Hardiness Zones:
| |
Zone 7 to Zone 10
Dirr says: "Zone 8 to 10, this species is not reliably hardy in Zone 7; severely injured and in exposed locations killed to ground during 1981-82 winter in Athens, GA when temperatures dropped to 0°F, same occurrence in 1983-84 at -3°F; some plants killed, others developed new shoots from base."
Growth:
| |
Range: Grows from 10' to 20'.
Dirr says: "8 to 12' (20') high, 8 to 12' (20') wide. Large multi-stemmed, stiff, upright-branched shrub that becomes unkempt with time unless properly pruned; like P. coccinea this is a rank grower and rather unruly. Prune selectively; there is no one best time to remove branches. Many cultivars available."
Flowers:
| |
Color(s): White
Season(s):
Spring
Dirr says: "1/4" diameter, malodorous, produced in small racemes in mid-April - Early May (Athens, GA); an entire plant in flower is quite attractive."
Foliage:
| |
Broadleaf Evergreen Semi-Evergreen
Color:
Leaves are dark green in the summer.
Dirr says: "May start leafing out as early as late February in Athens, GA; lustrous; foliage may discolor in colder areas of South."
Fruit:
| |
Color:
Red
Season(s):
Late Summer, Early Fall
Dirr says: "globose, 1/4" diameter, red pome that matures in September - October and persists through the ensuing winter; the entire shrub is a great mass of red; birds apparently leave these until they are desparately hungry."
Landscape Value:
| |
Can be used as a foundation plant. Can be used as a hedge plant. Can be used as a grouping plant.
Dirr says: "Excellent for fruit effect and widely used for every conceivable landscape purpose; single specimen, foundation plantings, hedges (a mistake), screens, masses, espaliers; requires a great deal amount of maintenance to keep it looking nice; where space permits it is worth using; the most widely used species in the Southeast."
