  Zone 4 to Zone 8

Growth:

  Range: Grows to 5'.
Dirr says: "(sometimes listed as S. j. 'Alpina' or 'Nana') Is a rather handsome variety that has hybridized with S. x bumalda cultivars to produce several interesting new selections. In the common form, the shrub makes a dainty, fine-textured, low-growing mass with pink flowers in late May (Athens, GA), June or July. The plant ranges from 15 to 30" high to as much as 6' in diameter. The compact spireas are excellent for modern landscapes where space is premium."

Flowers:

  Color(s): Pink
Season(s): Late Spring, Early Summer

Dirr says: "It flowers later than the S. x bumalda types, usually 5 to 10 days later."

Foliage:

  Deciduous
Color: Leaves are bluish-green in the summer and yellow, red and green in the fall.
Dirr says: "It leafs out later than the S. x bumalda types, usually 5 to 10 days later. The small, 5-veined light blue-green leaves cover the plant thickly and provide a fine foil for the pink flowers. The leaves measure less than 1/2" or less but range to 1" in some types."

Fruit:

  Color: Black
Season(s): Fall

Landscape Value:

Can be used as a grouping plant.

Dirr says: "Over the years, I have allowed it to cascade over walls and used it as a low facer and as a ground cover. The origin of the plant is not clear. IT was described in 1879 from a plant foumd wild on Mt. Hakone in the central island of Japan. The general concensus is that the form of S. j. var. alpina in cultivation is of garden origin."

Is Urban Tolerant
