Origin:

  Quebec to Ontario and Minnesota, south to Georgia and Missouri  

Sun/Water Requirements:

  Can tolerate both shady and sunny conditions.
Moderate climate.
Dirr says: "Prefers moist, well-drained soils; performs better under cultivation than in native haunts; in the wild is often loose and open, but under cultivation takes on a more dense, vigorous nature; have found it in heavy shade just above the flood plain in the University's Botanical Garden (Georgia)."

Growth:

  Range: Grows from 15' to 30'.
Dirr says: "upright, heavily branched, suckering shrub with smooth striped bark forming a solid aggregate of brush, sometimes wide-spreading; actually a rather attractive shrub; have seen as a small tree. 10 to 15' in height, usually taller than wide at maturity."

Dirr says: "bell-shaped, 1/3" long, borne in nodding 1 1/2 to 2" long panicles, abundant, April - May."

Color: Leaves are dark green in the summer and yellow in the fall.
Dirr says: "Rather nice for foliage effect."

  Color: Green, Black
Season(s): Late Summer, Early Fall
Dirr says: "The most curious aspect of bladdernuts is the inflated, balloon-like fruit. A 3-lobed, 1 to 1 1/2" long, inflated capsule, pale green changing to light brown, effective in September."  

Landscape Value:

  Can be used as an ornamental plant.

Dirr says: "could be used for naturalizing; best reserved for parks and other low maintenance areas"
