Origin:

  Connecticut to Florida, west to Michigan and Texas  

Sun/Water Requirements:

  Partial/Full sun.
Moderate to dry conditions.
Dirr says: "does well in dry soils."

Climate / Hardiness Zones:

  Zone 3 to Zone 8

Growth:

  Range: Grows from 15' to 30'.
Dirr says: "12 to 15' in height by 8 to 12' in width, can grow 20 to 30' high. Round headed tree or multi-stemmed shrub, stiffly branched, similar to Crataegus (Hawthorn) in growth habit. Have seen some 20 to 25' plants in tree form that were quite handsome."

Color: Leaves are dark green in the summer and orange, red and purple in the fall.
Dirr says: "handsome clean foliage in summer changing to purplish to reddish purple in the fall; various authorities have described the fall color as shining red, dull deep red to bronze; variable from plant to plant."  

Fruit:

  Color: Red, Black
Season(s): Late Summer, Early Fall
Dirr says: "pinkish, rose and at maturity bluish black, bloomy, September through fall. Fruit is palatable and has been used for preserves since Colonial days."  

Landscape Value:

  Can be used as an ornamental plant.
Can be used as a grouping plant.
