Armitage says: "By midsummer, the flower buds have initiated and start to appear.Plants require full sun, otherwise stems are weak and the heavy flowers cause the stems to topple.Flowers are smaller and more numerous but plants are more attractive than if they are spreadeagled across the ground.Alternatively, the plants may be supported and larger flowers will result.The flower buds appear whitish, slowly turn shell-pink, and age to a deep bronze red.They bloom well into the fall and dry on the stem."

Leaves are light green and green.
Armitage says: "The 2-3" long fleshy leaves are sessile, sharply and irregularly toothed.When my kids were young, they liked to gently part the upper and lower base of a leaf and blow it up like a balloon.The upper leaves are smaller with more rounded bases than the lower leaves and all have a prominent midrib.Green shoots are always just below the surface and by early March, mounds of light green foliage freshen the garden."
