Origin:

southwestern Virginia to northern Georgia in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Sun/Water Requirements:

Can tolerate both shady and sunny conditions.
Moderate climate.
Dirr says: "partially shaded, sheltered exposure. Needs moist, well-drained soils; will not tolerate droughty conditions"

Climate / Hardiness Zones:

  Zone 4 to Zone 7

Growth:

Range: Grows from 30' to 50'.
Dirr says: "45 to 60' in height by 20 to 25' spread. Airy, spiry-topped tree with a tapering trunk and short, stout, often pendulous branches forming a handsome, evenly pyramidal head; often more compact. Handsome in the wild as it grows on the side of the mountains, tall and stately, surveying the valleys below. Slow to medium growth rate, often more compact; not as fast as T. canadensis."

Flowers:

  Color(s): Green
Season(s): Late Spring

Foliage:

  Needle Evergreen
Color: Leaves are dark green in the summer.
Dirr says: "darker green than T. canadensis. Easily separable from T. canadensis by the way the foliage radiates around the stem forming a bottlebrush-like effect, the larger cones and entire needles."

Fruit:

  Color: Brown
Season(s): Spring, Fall
Dirr says: "cones short-stalked, oblong, 1 to 1 1/2" long, 1" wide, scales radiating out from center."

Landscape Value:

Can be used as a specimen plant.
Can be used as a grouping plant.

Dirr says: "performs better than T. canadensis under city conditions and is probably as good a landscape plant but not as well-known. Tends to be more stiff and rigid although I have seen plants that rival the best T. canadensis; qualities may be overstates for it has never found its way into the mainstream."
