  New Brunswick to Ontario, south to Florida and Texas  

Sun/Water Requirements:

  Can tolerate both shady and sunny conditions.
Moderate climate.
Dirr says: "does best in full sun although withstands shade will not withstand wet or compacted soils"

  Zone 4 to Zone 9

Dirr says: "appears to require mycorrhizal inoculum (from local native beech stand) to facilitate reasonable growth. American Beech is more amenable to culture in Zones 7 to 9 than the European"

Crockett noted, "If the word noble had to be applied to ony one kind of tree, the honor would probably go to the beech.""
