  Maine to Ontario and Minnesota, south to Florida and Texas into northeastern Mexico

Growth:

  Range: Grows from 50' to 100'.
Dirr says: "Next to Liriodendron tulipifera (Tulip Tree), is one of our tallest eastern native deciduous broadleaf trees. Large, massive trunk and a wide-spreading open crown of massive, crooked branches; a behemoth in the world of trees; a striking and impressive specimen especially in winter when the white, mottled bark stands out against the cold dark sky."

Dirr says: "If native to an area do not remove the tree(s); however do not plant it; used for street tree planting in Urbana, IL; the tree is simply too large and is constantly dropping leaves, twigs and fruits. In a native situation especially along water courses it is an impressive sight in the landscape."
