Origin:

South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Florida

Sun/Water Requirements:

Can tolerate both shady and sunny conditions.
Moderate climate.

Climate / Hardiness Zones:

  Zone 4 to Zone 9

Dirr says: "grows contentedly on the University of Maine campus where it has withstood -30 degrees F; at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum it is listed as borderline."

Growth:

Range: Grows from 10' to 20'.
Dirr says: "wide-spreading, suckering, multi-stemmed shrub with many upright, slender branches; often with an irregular, spreading almost stratified appearance; excellent form and texture in the branching structure. Have not seen other plants competing under this buckeye."

Flowers:

  Color(s): White
Season(s): Summer

Dirr says: "produced June - July on 8 to 12" long panicles; outstanding in flower; there are few summer flowering plants that can rival this species. In my mind it is one of the handsomest of all native southeastern flowering shrubs."

Foliage:

  Deciduous
Color: Leaves are dark green and green in the summer and yellow in the fall.
Dirr says: "folaige is little troubled by diseases which afflict A. glabra and A. hippocastanum; have observed bright yellow fall color; expression of good fall color appears to be strongly dependent on ideal environmental conditions."

Fruit:

  Color: Black
Season(s): Fall
Dirr says: "have not noticed abundant fruit set in northern states possibly because of shortness of growing season; in more southerly areas significant fruit set often occurs, ripen in late September to early October (Athens, GA)."

Landscape Value:

Can be used as a grouping plant.

Dirr says: "excellent for massing, clumping or placing in shrub borders; actually a handsome speciment plant; very effective when used under shade trees and in other shady areas."
