Sun/Water Requirements:

  Partial/Full shade.
Moderate to dry conditions.
Dirr says: "needs to be sited in shade at least in South, for younger leaves when exposed to hot sun will blacken. Has been known to grow under beeches, lindens and horsechestnuts where grass will not grow. Winter shade is also required for the leaves may become sickly green."

Dirr says: "prefers warmer temperatures and in northern climates is used as indoor plants; hardy to 0 to -5 degrees F."

Growth:

  Range: Grows from 5' to 10'.
Dirr says: "usually ranges from 6 to 10' in height, slightly less in spread; can grow to 15'. Densely upright-rounded to rounded shrub consisting of a thicket of erect or arching branches. Always a rather neat and tidy evergreen shrub."

Dirr says: "berry-like drupe that matures in October and November and persists through the following spring; quite handsome but often hidden by the foliage."  

Landscape Value:

  Can be used as a foundation plant.
Can be used as a grouping plant.

Dirr says: "used extensively in the south under the canopy of large trees and in ground cover plantings to break up the monotony of the sea of green. Used in foundation plantings expecially on the north and east side of homes. The variegated types add a touch of brightness to dark corners; also nice in groupings. Remains quite dense even in heavy shade."
