Origin:

Northern Asia from Ural to Japan

Sun/Water Requirements:

  Partial/Full sun.
Moderate climate.
Dirr says: "Prefers moist, well-drained organic soil; tends to be dwarfed in dry soils."

Climate / Hardiness Zones:

  Zone 2 to Zone 8

Growth:

Range: Grows from 5' to 10'.
Dirr says: "Erect, rather coarse multi-stemmed shrub, spreads rapidly by suckers, forming colonies. Many people say the texture is coarse but I feel if the shrub is properly pruned and maintained the texture is at worst medium in summer; tends toward coarseness in winter."

Flowers:

  Color(s): White
Season(s): Summer

Dirr says: "late June into July, borne in large, fleecy, 4 to 10" long panicles; very effective and, in fact, outstanding in flower. Flowers occur on new wood. Prune in early spring before growth starts as the flowers are produced on current season's growth. Cut off old flowers."

Foliage:

  Deciduous
Color: Leaves are dark green in the summer and yellow and green in the fall.
Dirr says: "Foliage simialr to European Mountainash. New growth has a reddish tinge when unfolding. Fall color is not effective; leafs out early and I have seen emerging leaves as early as late March in Central Illinois."

Fruit:

  Color: Black
Season(s): Fall

Landscape Value:

Can be used as a grouping plant.

Dirr says: "Easy plant to grow, however it is not widely known. Excellent plant for the shrub border, for massing, grouping, might make a good bank cover as it freely suckers and spreads; needs considerable room to spread and is not suitable for small planting areas."

Other:

  Is Resistant to Disease
Is Resistant to Insects
Is Salt Tolerant
