  Southern Europe and Asia Minor  

Sun/Water Requirements:

  Can tolerate both shady and sunny conditions.
Moderate climate.
Dirr says: "makes a good plant in the shade, especially some of the cultivars Needs well-drained soils."

Dirr says: "Avoid excessive fertilization."

Growth:

  Range: Grows from 15' to 30'.
Dirr says: "large, wide-spreading, evergreen shrub of solid, dense constitution, extremely bold element because of large, lustrous leaves; have observed as low-branched tree. Can grow 10 to 18' high and under ideal conditions might become 25 to 30' wide but is small under cultivation and principally represented by the cultivars. Withstands pruning very well."
