  Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan  

Sun/Water Requirements:

  Can tolerate both shady and sunny conditions.

  Range: Grows from 5' to 10'.
Dirr says: "very difficult to ascertain from the literature the actual size of the species, listed as reaching 20' by various authorities; in actuality a shrub 5 to 10' high with a similar or greater spread; much-branched, dense shrub."

Dirr says: "excellent for textural differences in foundation plantings, hedges and masses, along walks and on gradual slopes; hedges in Japan have been maintained for so long that they can be walked on; very handsome and worthwhile landscape plant; often overused and abused; often massacred with a pruning shears to produce "handsome" pieces of geometric sculpture; actually nicer if left to their own genetic control; perhaps remove an odd branch here or there for shaping, but otherwide stand back and enjoy."
