Sun/Water Requirements:

  Requires full sun.
Moderate climate.
Dirr says: "full sun to maximize flower"

Climate / Hardiness Zones:

  Zone 5 to Zone 9

Dirr says: "vegetatively hardy in zone 4, however, flower buds are often killed in Zone 5, acceptable in 6 to 8(9); -10 to -15 degrees F appear to coincide with flower bud kill. Often injured by late freezes and flower quality is reduced; I have seen forsythia flowers a beautiful golden yellow one day and with a hard freeze over night they are transformed to brown mush"

Growth:

Range: Grows from 5' to 10'.
Dirr says: "Rank-growing, differentially developing upright and arching canes which give it the appearance that the roots were stuck in an electric socket; always needs grooming, one of the most overrated and over-used shrubs!; will sucker to form large colonies."

Flowers:

  Color(s): Yellow
Season(s): Spring

Dirr says: "bloom for 2 to 3 weeks on old wood; the justifiable reason for using forsythia is the wonderful flower effect in early spring; in the Midwest one was easily frustrated waiting for a swaggering golden yellow shrub to appear in the spring landscape only to find that a significant portion of the flower buds was killed by cold. Prune after flowering by cutting plant to ground or removing the oldest stems."

Foliage:

  Deciduous
Color: Leaves are dark green and green in the summer and yellow and green in the fall.
Dirr says: "green or yellow-green in fall, sometimes with a tinge of purple; have seen respectable fall color on certain plants in the Athens, GA area, leaves hold late (November) and may turn a deep burgundy"

Fruit:

  Color: Black
Season(s): Fall

Landscape Value:

Can be used as a grouping plant.

Dirr says: "Chief value is in the early spring flower; forsythia do not belong in foundation plantings but are often used there; shrub border, massing, groupings, bank plantings are the most appropriateplaces"

Other:

  Is Resistant to Disease
Is Resistant to Insects
Is Urban Tolerant
