Growth:

  Range: Grows from 30' to 50'.
Dirr says: "Interesting, rounded to almost mop-headed, dense branching tree. I have seen young trees that were pyramidal but with age the outline becomes more rounded. The bark is beautiful and I have seen all kinds of combinations and permutations."

Dirr says: "although seldom credited with good flower characteristics, the white flowers occur in 2 to 3" long, 20 - 30-flowered racemes in great profusion around early to mid-May."

Dirr says: "There are several magnificent trees near the old shrub collection at the Arnold Arboretum (Boston) and these will make believers out of any gardener. My first exposure to this tree occurred at the Royal Botanical Garden, Hamilton, Ontario, and on that tree the bark was a rich cinnamon brown and actually exfoliated in shaggy masses. Other trees I have seen showed minimal exfoliation. The color varies from brownish yellow to reddish brown to the cinnamon brown mentioned above."
