Dirr says: "Requires semi-shade and moisture retentive soils under cultivation."

Dirr says: "Probably best ini Zone 8b, 9, 10 on West Coast. Many gardeners in the South talk about cold hardy forms but I have yet to see a mature specimen (over 20') as most exist as defoliated or dieback shrubs."

Dirr says: "habit is dense, pyramidal-oval to haystack-shaped. Variable in size but 8 to 12' represents a fine specimen. Literature notes specimens over 60' high."
