Origin:

  Japan

Sun/Water Requirements:

Moderate climate.
Armitage says: "Needs excellent drainage; a rocky area is best and plants should be protected from dessicating winds."

Climate / Hardiness Zones:

  Zone 4 to Zone 7

Growth:

Range: Grows from 6" to 12".

Flowers:

  Color(s): Blue, Yellow
Season(s): Spring

Armitage says: "The flowering stems extend from the rosette but plants remain prostrate, bearing blue flowers from spring to early summer in the axils. The flowers are not as visible against the leaves as in other species, so the foliage has to look good for the plant to look good.Therein lies the flaw; this is a difficult plant to gush over when half the leaves are turning yellow and the flowers are fair at best."

Foliage:

Color: Leaves are yellow and bluish-green.
Armitage says: "It is unique in that a tight rosette of blue leaves forms which is unlike any other bluebell normally seen. The flowers are not as visible against the leaves as in other species, so the foliage has to look good for the plant to look good.Therein lies the flaw; this is a difficult plant to gush over when half the leaves are turning yellow and the flowers are fair at best.I love the foliage of this plant in early spring, but I have not seen too many outstanding specimens as the season wears on."

Landscape Value:

Can be used as a specimen plant.

Armitage says: "I love the foliage of this plant in early spring, but I have not seen too many outstanding specimens as the season wears on."
